Erie County Regional Planning Commission Releases Plans for the 4th Annual Active Transportation Month

The Erie County Regional Planning Commission (ERPC) Metropolitan Planning Organization is excited to present the fourth year of Active Transportation Month.  Active transportation is any form of transit that is self-propelled.  This could be in the form of biking, using a scooter, roller-skating or one of many more options!  Active transportation is important to our community because it reduces the amount of traffic on our roads, helps preserve our environment, and improves overall health.

May is national bike month and there will be educational display boards at the Erie County Services Center and Office Building. In addition, staff has also compiled a calendar with a list of local events occurring in May that will be posted at the end of April at both buildings. This year, the coloring contest has returned (kids up to 5th grade may enter) and a booth at Kidsfest on May 16th.

What’s new this year?  Staff has teamed up with the Erie County Health Department and the Erie MetroParks for the Just Walk program. The Just Walk program consists of walks at various locations in Erie County led by local physicians. The Walks are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and, for those interested, more information can be found at the MetroParks or Health Department websites.  For the month of May, ERPC will be donating raffle prizes for walk participants in honor of ATM.  Also exciting this year, a bicycle rodeo is being held at the Erie County Services Center on May 14th from 12:00 to 2:00.  The rodeo will have indoor and outdoor elements and will be held regardless of weather.  Bring your bike and helmet if you have one.  A parental/guardian permission form must be signed in order to participate prior to the event.  Forms will be available online, in the planning office and by request, as well as at the event.  Bicycle helmets, bike lights and more will be raffled off.
