Child Abuse Prevention Month is celebrated nationwide in April in an attempt to focus the public’s attention on combating the dramatically-increasing numbers of child abuse that are occurring across America and here in Erie County.

To highlight this program and to draw attention to the issue Erie County Department of Job & Family Services is sponsoring  a number of events .  A visit to the agency, located at 221 W. Parish Street, would reveal  an outside display of twenty-two wooden cut-out children created and decorated by staff as well as window decorations created by staff and children whom we are serving.

On Thursday , April 4th, staff will be at the Erie County Common Pleas Courthouse to place pinwheels on the lawn which commemorate victims of abuse, while Wednesday, April 10th is county “Wear Blue to Work” day for the same purpose.  A Community Scavenger Hunt will be held at the agency on Saturday, April 20th from 12:00 -3:00, and a National Crime Victims Awareness event will be held at the Sandusky Mall on Sunday, April 21 and Monday, April 22.

Capping off the month is ECDJFS’s annual ACE (Aiding in Children’s Excellence) Awards Banquet  from  5:00-8:00 on Tuesday, April 23 at the American Legion Post 83 on Hayes Avenue.  Recognition will be given at this dinner to all individuals who were nominated and particularly to those who win in various categories of providing service to children in the community.
