Wellness Program Hosts First 5K!!

Posted on September 12, 2012

As a component of the Erie County health benefits program, nominations are accepted annually for a goodwill component or charitable cause that employees can support through a variety of fundraising via wellness activities.  Over the past several years, over $5,000 has been raised for the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association.  For 2012, two employees from different departments, who had never previously met, both submitted nominations for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as the 2012 goodwill component.  Both employees have family members affected by cystic fibrosis and believed it was important to raise awareness with County employees and the public.

Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States.  Along with several other activities, the Erie County Wellness Health Incentive Program (WHIP) and Wellness Committee planned and coordinated its first, and hopefully annual, Jail Break 5K Run / Walk.  With over 130 registered for the race, the event was a huge success!  In addition, fun activities, including a catch the crook, food and craft vendors, face-painting and an open house of the Dog Warden's office rounded a great day.

The WHIP program and Wellness Committee wish to express thanks to all participants and their family members, and the Firelands Area Runners Club, as well as the sponsorships that made the event a success:  Vacationland Federal Credit Union, The FOP Lake Erie Lodge # 17, CLI Document Destruction, Smiley Automotive, Payne Nickles & Company, the Lighthouse Resort, Toft's Dairy, Caremark, Huntington Insurance, and Medical Mutual of Ohio.  Mark your calendars now for the 2nd Jail Break 5k for Saturday, August 17, 2013!!
