Description of the Job: The Juvenile Corrections Officer is responsible for overseeing, supervising, and disciplining juvenile residents in the Detention Center. This individual is also charged with reporting conduct and participation of the residents. The Juvenile Corrections Officer will receive supervision from the Program Administrator. [Page] PT Juvenile Corrections Officer, Family Court, Detention Center Essential Functions to be Performed: • Supervise residents in all group activities as assigned. • Adhere to strict security control measures to guard against escapes; especially during transporting and escorting youth within and outside the facility, and contraband entering the facility. • Document behavior and productivity of residents in all activities within the facility or when transported outside the facility. • Document inappropriate behavior and attitudes of residents on daily activity sheets, disciplinary forms, and serious physical outbursts on major incident reports. • Monitor resident group activities seven days a week. • Confer with other detention staff and/or court personnel regarding residents’ progress, behavior problems or security risks. • Monitor and document bed checks made on residents during all the periods residents are in sleeping rooms. • Discipline residents in a consistent and appropriate manner for violations of the Center's code of conduct. • Monitor visitation of residents and ensure that the visitor log is documented. • Dispense and record all prescribed medications taken by residents. • Report improvements needed in building maintenance or security to immediate supervisor promptly. • Attend scheduled staff meetings to contribute ideas, receive information concerning policies and procedures, security, training, and share valuable information concerning residents. • Attend conferences and seminars to receive a minimum of 32 hours of mandated training as scheduled by the Administrator. • Provide crisis intervention, as needed. • Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: • Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade. • Knowledge of human relations. • Knowledge of public relations. • Knowledge and ability to adhere to safety practices and procedures. • Knowledge of relative court procedures. • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions. • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. • Ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with residents, co-workers, outside agencies, and supervisors. • Ability to respond effectively to crisis intervention situations. • Ability to establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Physical Requirements: • Alternate frequently between sitting/standing/walking throughout an eight (8) hour workday. • Lift/carry a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. • Reaching with bilateral upper extremities into/up to/down to various heights. • Push/pull with sixty (60) pounds of initial force. • Climb onto stepladder (2 steps). • Bend/squat/crouch/kneel. • Excessive physical exertion may be required to maintain control and cooperation of inmates.
