Magistrate Croteau moved to Sandusky in 1969 with his family and graduated from Perkins High School in 1975.
He earned a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Business Administration in 1978 and a Masters of Business Administration in 1979 from the Ohio State University. After working in the private sector for 5 years, he returned to the Ohio State University and received his Juris Doctorate in 1987. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar the same year.
After admittance to the Ohio Bar, he served as the Erie County IV-D attorney for two years and then entered into private practice.
Magistrate Croteau was appointed to his current position in 1996 by former Judge Donald Ramsey. In 2001, current Judge Robert DeLamatre reappointed Magistrate Croteau as Senior Magistrate.
Since his appointment to the bench, he has presided over more than 700 trials.
