Jury Duty - Grand Jury Frequently Asked Questions

How was my name chosen?

Your name was obtained from the Erie County Board of Elections voters’ registration records and the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and then randomly selected from a computerization program.

What types of cases may I have to be a juror on?

Cases presented to the Grand Jury are of a criminal nature. The Grand Jury does not determine guilt or innocence; it only decides if there is sufficient evidence for a formal charge - “an indictment”.

What do I need to do with the enclosed card?

You need to fill out the card self-addressed, stamped card. Answer each question completely and then return it within five (5) days.

How long do I have to serve on Grand Jury duty?

Your term of service on jury duty is for three (3) months; however, if selected, generally, you are only required to be present the first Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of every month during your term of service. If there is a holiday observed during the first week of a month you will be required to be present the second Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of that month.  There is also a chance that you could be called in for a special grand jury session during your term.

Where do I report at the Court when I am required to appear for Grand Jury duty?

You must report and sign in at the “Office of the Clerk of Courts,” Erie County Common Pleas Courthouse, 323 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio. The Office of the Clerk of Courts is on the 1st floor to your right immediately after you go through Court Security.

I am no longer a resident of Erie County; do I still have to serve?

No, but return the completed card along with a note stating you no longer reside in Erie County.

What happens if I have a reason I can’t serve, and I want to request to be excused from Grand Jury duty?

Submit your request in writing, with any appropriate supporting documentation that you want the Court to review, then mail it with your completed self-addressed, stamped card. Medical reasons must include documentation by your physician/healthcare provider. Employment related reasons must be submitted and supported by you, not by your employer. The Court will review your request / documentation, and will inform you by letter if your request has been granted or denied.
