Concealed Handgun Licenses are by appointment only. Hours of operations are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8AM to 4PM. Tuesday and Thursday 10AM to 6PM. To request an appointment use the 'request an appointment link'. The Concealed Handgun License office is closed on these legal holidays:
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- Presidents' Day
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving and Friday
- Christmas
NEW CHL APPLICATIONS
If you are applying for a new CHL, you will need to have all of the following items with you at the time of your appointment:
1. A current application, signed and dated; and
2. A passport sized color photo, taken within the last 30 days. This photo will stay with your CHL application and will not be returned; and
3. Your driver license or state identification card; and
4. Your CHL training certificate, dated within three (3) years prior to the date of your appointment; and
5. If you have been a resident of the State of Ohio for five (5) years or longer as of the date of your appointment, a bank certified check or money order made payable to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office in the amount of $67.00; or
6. If you been a resident of the State of Ohio for less than five (5) years as of the date of your appointment, a bank certified check or money order made payable to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office in the amount of $77.00.
RENEWAL CHL APPLICATIONS
If you are applying for renewal of your CHL, you will need to have all of the following items with you at the time of your appointment:
1. A current application, signed and dated; and
2. Your previous CHL; and
3. Your driver license or state identification card; and
4. If you have been a resident of the State of Ohio for five (5) years or longer as of the date of your appointment, a bank certified check or money order made payable to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office in the amount of $50.00; or
5. If you been a resident of the State of Ohio for less than five (5) years as of the date of your appointment, a bank certified check or money order made payable to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office in the amount of $50.00.
6. You do NOT need to bring a passport photo for a renewal.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE CHL PROCESS
1. We will take a digital photo of you that will be placed on your CHL card on the day of your appointment.
2. We only accept bank certified checks or money orders made payable to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, in the amounts noted above, for payment of application fees for new or renewal CHL’s. WE DO NOT ACCEPT CASH, PERSONAL CHECKS, BUSINESS CHECKS, CREDIT CARDS, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF PAYMENT FOR CHL APPLICATION FEES.
3. If you are on active duty with any branch of the United States Armed Forces, of if you have been honorably discharged from any branch of the United States Armed Forces at any time in the past, the requirement for a training certificate for applicants for a new CHL is waived. Your United States Armed Forces issued identification card showing active status, or your DD-214 documenting your honorable discharge, will serve as proof of your current or former military training and will allow for the training waiver. Either of these documents, whichever is applicable to you, must be presented at the time of your CHL appointment.
All application fees for new or renewal CHL applicants are currently waived for those that meet the military requirements in paragraph 3 above and for those that have the appropriate documentation, also as listed above. You must provide the appropriate documentation at the time of your appointment to have the application fees waived.
