How To Read Your Water Bill

Your monthly water and sewer bill contains some valuable information. Do you know what all the information means?

One of the most important items on the bill is the water usage, located in the middle of the bill. This is the amount of water that flows through your water meter and is measured in cubic feet (CF). One hundred cubic feet (1 CCF) is equivalent to 748 gallons of water. The read dates (date the meter was read) are located directly above the usage amounts on the bill, and are also an important factor when analyzing the bill. The read dates reflect the number of days in the billing period.

The calculation of the water portion of the bill is dependent on the size of the water meter and the amount of water that flows through the meter, measured in cubic feet (CF). Most residential meters are 5/8”.

Here’s an example of how to calculate a bill based on a monthly water usage of 500 CF (5 CCF), with a typical residential 5/8” meter:

Erie County Water District A Customers (Effective with bills due on or about 06/17/2023, Commissioners Resolution 21-47)
Minimum charge for first 200 CF (2 CCF)= $19.25*
Next 300 CF (3 CCF) x $0.0483 per CF ($4.83/CCF)= $14.49
Total monthly water charges for 500 CF (5 CCF)= $33.74
*This is the minimum charge for any usage between 0 CF-200 CF (0-2 CCF) with the water meter turned on.

Erie County Water District B Customers (Effective with bills due on or about 06/17/2023, Commissioners Resolution 21-48)
Minimum charge for first 200 CF (2 CCF)= $38.48*
Next 300 CF (3 CCF) x $0.0926 per CF ($9.26/CCF)= $27.78
Total monthly water charges for 500 CF (5 CCF)= $66.26

*This is the minimum charge for any usage between 0 CF-200 CF (0-2 CCF) with the water meter turned on.
